Gig platforms add tax filing to apps
Delivery platforms like Zomato, Swiggy, and Zepto are integrating tax-filing assistance directly into their worker apps, making it easier for gig workers to file returns and claim refunds.
One percent tax deduction adds up fast
Gig platforms deduct 1% of worker payouts as tax at source. Over a year, these deductions create significant refunds for workers earning below the taxable threshold.
Tax filings quadrupled in three years
ClearTax reported gig worker filings jumped from 2.5 lakh in 2023-24 to 11 lakh in 2025-26. Most filers earned below the taxable income threshold.
“Most of them are below taxable income”
Refunds reach crores across platforms
Zomato and Blinkit delivered Rs 33.6 crore in refunds to 2.1 lakh workers. Swiggy generated Rs 6.5 crore, Zepto Rs 4.9 crore, and Meesho Rs 2 crore in refund claims.
First-time filers dominate the numbers
Around 75% of Zomato and Blinkit filers were first-timers. Swiggy saw over a third as first-time filers, while Meesho reported 70% were new to tax filing.
Financial records unlock credit and visas
Filed tax returns create formal financial documentation that helps workers apply for loans and credit. Some workers also file to support visa applications for jobs in West Asia.
Experts question true financial inclusion
While numbers are growing, researchers note platforms report different metrics, making it hard to assess real impact. One expert called it a selective interpretation of financial inclusion.
“It's a very, very selective and convenient interpretation of financial inclusion”
