India Data Centre Capacity May Surge

India's data centre capacity could reach 24-26 GW by 2035-36 without significantly increasing power demand.

In brief

India's data centre capacity could reach 24-26 GW by 2035-36 without significantly increasing power demand. India's data centre capacity may grow to 24-26 GW by 2035-36 but will remain a small share of overall electricity demand. Originally reported by The Economic Times.

Data Centre Capacity Growth

India's data centre capacity could surge to 24-26 GW from less than 2 GW currently.

“Right now the data center is hardly less than 2 gigawatt. Even if it goes to 24 to 26 what has been said today and maybe it might go slightly higher as well.”

Renewable Energy Targets

India aims for 800 GW renewable energy capacity by 2035-36, with 308 GW installed currently.

“We would definitely be reaching around 500 gigawatt by 2030...we have now also planned for 2035-36 wherein we are targeting to reach somewhere around 800 gigawatt.”

Power Demand Projections

Data centre growth is factored into future power demand projections without significant impact.

“Even if it goes to 24 to 26 what has been said today and maybe it might go slightly higher as well. Still, as a percentage of the overall demand it is not going to be much.”

Energy Storage Progress

Energy storage infrastructure development is gaining momentum according to CEA.

“Storage is not an issue. It's picking up and it will definitely come up very, very soon.”

The headline

India's data centre capacity may grow to 24-26 GW by 2035-36 but will remain a small share of overall electricity demand.
