Four-lane bridge gets approval
Indian Railways approved a four-lane road overbridge on the Udhna-Ukai Songadh section of Western Railway at a cost of 133.23 crore rupees, split equally between railways and the state government.
Complex design challenges ahead
The crossing location has a 62% skew angle, significantly increasing design and construction complexity. The railway bridge portion uses an Open Web Girder structure costing 91.60 crore rupees.
Three major components
The project includes a 311.58 metre viaduct costing 19.98 crore rupees and a 524.32 metre railway approach costing 10.25 crore rupees, alongside the main bridge structure.
Benefits for traffic and trains
The grade-separated infrastructure will reduce road and rail interference, enabling smoother vehicle movement and more efficient train operations on the section.
Broader railway expansion plan
In September, the Cabinet approved three multitracking projects worth 10,783 crore rupees across five states, adding 656 kilometres to the network and benefiting 4,790 villages with a combined population of 56 lakh.
Tourism and connectivity gains
The expanded railway network will improve access to tourist and pilgrimage sites including Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Amarkantak, and Achanakmar Tiger Reserve across five states.
