In brief
State-run iron ore producer unveils three-phase plan to cut operational carbon footprint by at least 90%. NMDC aims for net zero operational emissions by 2047 through renewable energy, fleet electrification, and carbon capture technologies. Originally reported by The Economic Times.
NMDC targets net zero by 2047
India's state-run iron ore producer plans to achieve net zero operational emissions by 2047. The target covers direct fuel consumption and electricity use.
Focus on scope 1 and 2 emissions
NMDC will tackle emissions from its own operations and from purchased electricity. Key strategies include energy efficiency, renewable energy, and carbon capture.
Three-phase rollout through 2047
The plan runs in phases: 2026 to 2030, then 2031 to 2040, and finally through 2047. NMDC aims for at least 90% emissions reduction, offsetting the rest.
Renewable energy already underway
NMDC has a 10.5 megawatt wind facility at Chitradurga and solar installations across projects. These cut dependence on conventional energy sources.
Greener transport infrastructure planned
A slurry pipeline project will reduce conventional transportation needs. NMDC also plans more rail freight as railway lines double around its operations.
Phased approach to decarbonisation
Early phases focus on energy efficiency, renewables, and electrification. Later phases will deploy deeper decarbonisation measures and emerging technologies.
What matters most
NMDC aims for net zero operational emissions by 2047 through renewable energy, fleet electrification, and carbon capture technologies.
