World's first 5G roaming milestone

T-Mobile and Jio have achieved the world's first 5G Standalone roaming connection, enabling customers to access consistent 5G speeds when traveling internationally. The breakthrough was made possible through Syniverse's connectivity platform.

“This is a monumental step for global wireless, and T-Mobile is proud to lead it.”

What 5G Standalone actually means

5G SA uses a dedicated 5G core network instead of relying on older 4G infrastructure. This enables faster speeds, lower latency, and more reliable connections for applications like IoT and real-time communications.

T-Mobile's vision for global connectivity

T-Mobile Chief Network Officer Ankur Kapoor said the company began laying groundwork for 5G Standalone in 2020. The goal is for customers to maintain seamless 5G experiences while streaming, sharing videos, or using business apps across borders.

Jio sees transformation beyond roaming

Jio's Mark Yarkosky called this a transformational milestone that goes beyond conventional roaming. The partnership could support new consumer and enterprise services, plus AI-enabled applications by leveraging 5G Standalone capabilities.

“This is a transformational milestone and far more than just roaming, it's about what becomes possible when two leading 5G Standalone networks work together.”

Syniverse enables the technical connection

Syniverse provided the security and mediation technology needed for the two networks to interconnect safely. The platform helps operators test, validate, and deploy 5G SA roaming as more networks adopt the technology.

Foundation for new cross-border services

The T-Mobile and Jio collaboration demonstrates how 5G Standalone can expand beyond individual networks to support interoperable services across borders. This could lay groundwork for new consumer, business, and emerging technology applications globally.
