Court orders report on disciplinary action

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday directed the State government to file a comprehensive report on disciplinary proceedings initiated against erring government employees.

Two point three five crore rupees swindled

A. Sakthivel of Karaikudi filed a public interest petition alleging government officials misappropriated more than two point three five crore rupees sanctioned for Adi Dravidar Hostel student welfare in Sivaganga district.

Funds meant for student essentials vanished

From two thousand seventeen to two thousand twenty-three, the sanctioned amount for student hair oil, soap and washing powder was swindled by officials and staff. No amount was credited to student accounts.

Eight Tahsildars implicated in the scam

Following complaints by activist Boominathan, Sivaganga Town Police registered a case transferred to the District Crime Branch. Investigation revealed eight Tahsildars were involved in the misappropriation.

Crime Branch reluctant to proceed further

Because the accused were revenue officials in the rank of Tahsildar, the District Crime Branch was reluctant to proceed with investigation. Sakthivel sought a CB-CID probe into the case.

Court adjourns case for four weeks

The Division Bench of Justices P. Velmurugan and K.K. Ramakrishnan took a serious view of delays in appointing an inquiry officer. The court posted the matter for hearing after four weeks.

The bottom line

The Madurai High Court ordered Tamil Nadu to file a report on disciplinary proceedings against officials accused of misappropriating two point three five crore rupees from Adi Dravidar Hostel student welfare funds between two thousand seventeen and two thousand twenty-three.
