Former Olympic captain replaces Warring as Punjab Congress president ahead of 2027 elections.
In brief
Former Olympic captain replaces Warring as Punjab Congress president ahead of 2027 elections. Pargat Singh, a former Indian hockey captain and three-time MLA, replaced Amrinder Singh Raja Warring as Punjab Congress president on October second, twenty twenty-six, ahead of Assembly elections due in twenty twenty-seven…
Hockey star enters politics
Pargat Singh, born March nineteen sixty-five in Mithapur, Jalandhar, captained India's men's hockey team at the nineteen ninety-two Barcelona and nineteen ninety-six Atlanta Olympics. A full-back, he was one of India's best defenders of his era.
Honours for hockey excellence
For his contributions to Indian hockey, Pargat Singh was honoured with the Arjuna Award in nineteen eighty-nine and the Padma Shri in nineteen ninety-eight. After retiring from international hockey, he served as director of sport and Superintendent of Police in Punjab.
From Akali Dal to Congress

Singh contested the twenty twelve Punjab Assembly elections on a Shiromani Akali Dal ticket from Jalandhar Cantonment and defeated the Congress candidate by over six thousand votes. He was suspended from the party in twenty sixteen.
Joins Congress with Sidhu
Ahead of the twenty seventeen Assembly polls, Singh joined Navjot Singh Sidhu's front Awaaz-e-Punjab. Both later joined Congress, and when Sidhu became Punjab Congress president, Singh was appointed general secretary of organisation.
Electoral success continues
In twenty seventeen, Singh defeated Akali Dal's Sarabjit Singh Makkar by over twenty-nine thousand votes. He retained his Jalandhar Cantonment seat in twenty twenty-two against an AAP rival, winning for the third time despite Congress being reduced to eighteen seats in the one hundred seventeen-member Assembly.
Minister in Channi government

In the previous Charanjit Singh Channi-led Congress government, Singh held important portfolios of education and sports. The sixty-one-year-old is a three-time MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment.
Replaces Warring as Congress chief
On Friday, October second, twenty twenty-six, Pargat Singh was appointed Punjab Congress president, replacing Ludhiana MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring ahead of Assembly elections due in twenty twenty-seven. The decision followed organisational feedback taken by party general secretary Sachin Pilot.
Balancing act amid power struggle
Singh's appointment is seen as a move to curb the ongoing power tussle between former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Warring. Party sources said Singh's clean, non-controversial image made him an acceptable choice across factions, helping bridge the divide between rival camps.
Regional equations in play
Singh's elevation fits the party's regional equations. Partap Singh Bajwa, a Jat Sikh, is Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, while Charanjit Singh Channi, a Dalit face, heads the campaign committee. Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa is also a Jat Sikh.
Vocal on Punjab issues
Known for sharing his views on matters concerning Punjab, Singh has taken on the AAP government over law and order, sports, education and issues related to his constituency. He now leads Congress into the twenty twenty-seven Assembly elections.
In short
Pargat Singh, a former Indian hockey captain and three-time MLA, replaced Amrinder Singh Raja Warring as Punjab Congress president on October second, twenty twenty-six, ahead of Assembly elections due in twenty twenty-seven.
