Hasina extradition possible, says India
India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi said on October 3, 2026 that Sheikh Hasina's extradition could happen through a well-structured legal process involving legality.
Hasina fled to India in August 2024
Sheikh Hasina sought refuge in India after her government fell in July-August 2024, based on consultation among those governing Bangladesh at that time.
India had no choice, Trivedi says

The High Commissioner said India had hardly any choice when Hasina sought refuge, describing it as India's duty to accept the reality of the situation.
“India had hardly any choice”
Bangladesh demands justice for deaths
Bangladesh's government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, has demanded Hasina's extradition to face justice for the July-August 2024 crackdown that killed at least eight hundred civilians.
UN panel counted higher death toll
A panel under the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights placed the number of fatalities from the crackdown at about one thousand four hundred.
Legal process is in place, Trivedi says
Trivedi said the legal process is well-structured and in place, but stressed that nobody can give a timeframe for when Hasina's extradition might happen.
“Nobody can give you a time frame”
India-Bangladesh extradition treaty exists
India and Bangladesh signed an extradition treaty in two thousand thirteen with specified grounds under which extradition may be halted, including offence of a political character.
Hasina evacuated by Bangladesh military
On August fifth, two thousand twenty-four, Sheikh Hasina was airlifted from her residence by a military helicopter and then flown to India by Bangladesh Air Force aircraft, not by Indian forces.
Bangladesh tribunal sentenced Hasina
In November two thousand twenty-five, Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal handed death sentences to Sheikh Hasina and her Home Minister Asaduzaman Khan Kamal for the crackdown.
Hasina declared she would return
On August fifth, two thousand twenty-six, Sheikh Hasina held a virtual press interaction and declared she would return to Bangladesh by December, angering the incumbent government.
India won't interfere in Bangladesh affairs
Trivedi said a good neighbour would not interfere in the internal affairs of neighbouring states, and that Bangladesh will decide independently which countries to build relations with.
