Career diplomat chosen for Nepal post
India has forwarded the name of Sudhakar Dalela, Secretary (Economic Relations), as Ambassador to Nepal. The proposal was sent to Kathmandu on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, and is expected to be approved soon by the Balen Shah government.
Dalela brings rare combination of experience
Dalela is a 1993-batch officer with experience managing ties with neighbouring countries from both the Ministry of External Affairs and the Prime Minister's Office. He previously served as India's Ambassador to Bhutan from 2022 to 2025.
Higher rank than previous Nepal ambassadors

Dalela holds a higher rank than former Ambassadors to Kathmandu, who were at Additional Secretary rank. This signals the importance India places on the India-Nepal relationship and its current delicate state.
Modi wanted experienced diplomats in neighbourhood
At the 11th Heads of Missions conference in April 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed disappointment at the slow reaction time of missions to political developments in Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Maldives.
Modi favoured seasoned diplomats going forward
Modi said the government would henceforth prefer Anubhavi, or seasoned and experienced, diplomats in the neighbourhood. This led many to speculate the government would send a politician to Nepal when the outgoing Ambassador Naveen Srivastava's term ended.
“Anubhavi”
Concerns about Nepal PM's unorthodox style
The government worried that Nepal Prime Minister Balen Shah, known for his unorthodox style, would not deal as well with a professional diplomat. In his first weeks in office, Shah declined to meet the Ambassadors of India and China except in larger groups.
Political appointees had been floated for role
Media reports in Delhi and Kathmandu had floated the names of several senior BJP leaders, particularly from Nepal-neighbouring states Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, for the Ambassador position before the decision shifted toward a career diplomat.
Bangladesh crisis prompted rethink on approach
Relations with Bangladesh have worsened, and the last-minute cancellation of Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman's visit in August 2026 is being ascribed to miscommunication between a political appointee and protocol-bound MEA officials.
Career diplomats traditional for sensitive posts
Vivek Katju, former Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan, Myanmar and Thailand, said that for at least three decades, only professional diplomats have been posted as heads of missions in India's neighbouring countries because these are very sensitive posts.
“These are very sensitive posts and they require quiet and deft handling which only a career diplomat can usually bring.”
Dalela's extensive neighbourhood experience
Dalela has considerable experience on the MEA's North desk for Bhutan and Nepal ties, serving as Director (North) from 2006 to 2007, and Joint Secretary (North) from 2016 to 2019. He will be the first officer with this much desk experience to also helm embassies in Thimphu and Kathmandu.
What matters most
India has chosen career diplomat Sudhakar Dalela as Ambassador to Nepal instead of a politician, signalling a shift toward diplomatic experience over political connections in sensitive neighbouring posts.
