Woman assaulted at Guwahati nightclub

A woman was partially stripped and assaulted by bouncers at a nightclub in Guwahati's Khanapara area early on Friday following a drunken brawl, police said.

Video goes viral, police act

Police registered a suo motu case and began investigating after a video of the alleged assault at the nightclub in the Khanapara area went viral on social media.

Seven arrested, including manager

Seven people aged between twenty-one and thirty years were arrested on Saturday, October third, twenty twenty-six. They included the nightclub's manager, the event manager, a front office executive, and three women.

CCTV shows assault sequence

Guwahati East Deputy Police Commissioner Tabu Ram Pegu said CCTV footage revealed the victim was assaulted inside the bar at around two thirty am, then dragged to the basement by her hair and clothes, where she was assaulted again and appeared semi-conscious.

“The footage revealed that the victim was assaulted inside the bar by a group of people at around 2.30 am. Thereafter, she was dragged towards the basement by pulling her hair and clothes, where she was again assaulted and appeared to become semi-conscious.”

Staff involvement, no police alert

Several people allegedly involved in the incident were associated with the bar or were its staff. The nightclub's management did not inform the local police station about the matter, Deputy Commissioner Pegu said.

Nightclub operating past closing time

Police are investigating how the nightclub, The Locals, was open much beyond its permitted closing time of twelve thirty am. Deputy Commissioner Pegu said police are examining the complete sequence of events, the role of each individual, and any other violations that may emerge.

Security guard's account of trigger

According to a security guard at the building housing the club, the woman had hit a female bouncer with a beer bottle inside the club. This angered other bouncers, who brought her downstairs and assaulted her, he claimed.
