Gold rings for Tamil Nadu newborns

The Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam provides a one-gram gold ring to children born in government hospitals in Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched it on September twenty-eighth.

Scheme applied from June onwards

The scheme is being implemented retrospectively from June twenty-second, twenty twenty-six, meaning eligible children born from that date onwards can receive the gold ring.

Original rule blocked migrant mothers

Original rule blocked migrant mothers

Initially, only mothers who were permanent residents of Tamil Nadu could qualify. This excluded women born in the state who had moved to another state after marriage.

Uma Maheswari's case prompted change

Uma Maheswari, living in Udayagiri in Mysuru district of Karnataka with her husband, returned to Karaikudi in Sivaganga district to give birth. She delivered at Karaikudi Government Headquarters Hospital on September seventeenth.

Government relaxes the eligibility rules

On Wednesday, October seventh, twenty twenty-six, Tamil Nadu relaxed the criteria. Children now qualify if their mother was born in Tamil Nadu and moved away after marriage, provided her parents remain permanent residents.

Darez Ahamed explains the decision

Darez Ahamed, Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, said the government noticed women from Tamil Nadu living elsewhere after marriage returned home for childbirth in government hospitals.

“women from Tamil Nadu who had been living in another State after marriage, but whose parents continued to reside permanently in Tamil Nadu, returned to their parental homes for childbirth”
