CBS News brass send a '60 Minutes' pep memo
A congratulatory note to staff lands just hours before season 59, after a summer of upheaval at CBS News.
In brief
A congratulatory note to staff lands just hours before season 59, after a summer of upheaval at CBS News. The memo reads as reassurance: new leadership wants the season premiere to mark a reset, not the aftershock of a shake-up. Originally reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
A memo before the premiere
CBS News and 60 Minutes leadership emailed staff Sunday morning, hours ahead of the season 59 premiere that night.
“congratulate the team on the launch of what will be an exciting season”
Three names on the note
It came from executive producer Nick Bilton, CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, and Tom Cibrowski, president and executive editor of CBS News.
Thanks for a hard summer
The trio used the note to thank everyone across CBS News for their support over the summer months.
“everyone across CBS News for the support over this summer”
What the summer held
The show went through a major staff overhaul and a leadership shake-up in recent months, driven by Weiss.
Weiss got the job last year
David Ellison appointed Weiss to steer the editorial direction of CBS News, a hire that reset the newsroom's chain of command.
Skydance owns the room
Ellison controls CBS after Skydance Media acquired Paramount Global, putting new ownership behind every change at the network's flagship newsmagazine.
What to remember
The memo reads as reassurance: new leadership wants the season premiere to mark a reset, not the aftershock of a shake-up.
