Thank the hotel

Courteney Cox's newest project traces back to the Beverly Hills Hotel, where an unplanned run-in turned into a directing job.
“Fans may have the Beverly Hills Hotel to thank for Courteney Cox's newest project.”
Her first feature in 12 years
Cox is directing Evil Genius, her return to feature directing after more than a decade away from the chair.
A corner seat and a compliment

Sitting at her favorite spot at the counter, Cox spotted Barbara Schroeder and told her how much she loved her Netflix documentary.
“I was at the Beverly Hills Hotel sitting at the counter; my favorite spot in the corner.”
It's available to direct
Schroeder, who made the Evil Genius documentary, told Cox the feature was open and pushed her to take it.
“She said, 'It's available to direct.' She goes, 'You should run with it.'”
Groundwork already laid
The two had a good relationship before the encounter, so the pitch landed on someone Schroeder already trusted.
“We had a good relationship before.”
The lucky room
Cox told THR's Studio at 1 Hotel during TIFF that the hotel has a track record for her. Deals, money, and now a film.
“I made a lot of deals there, and made a lot of money there. It's just interesting.”
The bottom line
Cox landed Evil Genius by accident, complimenting the documentary's director in person at her regular hotel spot.
