Drone intercepted near Mecca
Saudi air defences destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca before it entered prohibited airspace. The coalition claims it was the second attempt to target the holy city since 2017.
Houthis deny targeting holy sites
The Iran-backed group strongly rejected claims of threatening Mecca. They called it a "worn-out lie that has been used before."
“We categorically deny that there is any threat from Yemen directed at the city of Mecca or any other holy sites”
House votes to end Iran war
The US House approved a war powers resolution 220-204 to halt Trump's military action without congressional approval. It's the third such vote this summer.
Resolution unlikely to reach Trump
None of the previous resolutions made it to the president's desk. Trump would almost certainly veto the measure if it did.
“Remember when Donald Trump said that this war would last just a few weeks?”
US troops leaving Iraq
Hundreds of remaining American troops stationed in northern Iraq will depart before the September 30 deadline. The withdrawal ends a decades-long deployment.
Iraqi militias refuse to disarm
Baghdad tied the US departure to a demand that militias give up their arms. Most factions have signaled no intention of complying.
OIC condemns alleged Houthi attacks
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation said the attacks violate the sanctity of holy sites and provoke Muslims worldwide. Mecca was under air raid alert for the first time in history.
“These attacks instil fear in innocent civilians, violate the sanctity of holy sites and mosques”
India condemns Houthi strikes
India expressed serious concern over attacks on Saudi civilian infrastructure and economic assets. Foreign minister Jaishankar discussed the crisis at the Brics summit.
“Such attacks undermine regional stability and threaten freedom of navigation through the Bab-el-Mandeb”
Iranian spyware targets UK dissidents
British intelligence warned that Iranian state actors used spyware called Chosen Brick to track dissidents, activists and journalists by impersonating their contacts.
Spyware enables total surveillance
The malware gave agents access to contacts, emails, social media messages, the device's microphone and screen content.
Oil prices fall despite supply fears
Brent crude fell 0.86% to $107.82 a barrel after US crude inventories rose by 7.1 million barrels. Saudi Arabia suspended oil loadings at Yanbu port following pipeline attacks.
Watchdog reports weapons shortfalls
A Pentagon inspector general report offered the first public accounting of the Iran war's costs in American lives, taxpayer dollars and physical damage to aircraft and bases.
The main idea
Regional tensions are escalating with drone attacks near Mecca, defiant Iraqi militias, and ongoing congressional efforts to end the Iran war.
