Three types of porn to be banned

From November six, the UK will make it illegal to possess or publish pornography depicting strangulation or suffocation, sexual activity between relatives, or adults roleplaying as children under sixteen.

Justice minister on the change

Justice minister Alex Davies-Jones said the ban aims to prevent content that normalises violence against women. Porn can shape what people think healthy relationships look like, especially for young people.

“Content that normalises, or even glorifies, violence against women is dangerous and can blur the line with what is acceptable in real life.”

Baroness Bertin's findings on harm

Conservative peer Baroness Gabby Bertin's review, published in February twenty twenty-five, found pornography showing women being choked has devastating real-world consequences. She said strangulation had gone into the bloodstream of society.

“It had gone into the bloodstream of society and it should be wiped out of the culture.”

Evidence of widespread strangulation

A study by the Institute for Addressing Strangulation in twenty twenty-four found more than a third of sixteen to thirty-four-year-old adults reported being strangled or choked during consensual sex.

What happens after November sixth

Davies-Jones warned anyone with this material to delete it and anyone sharing it to stop.After November sixth, possessing or publishing the banned content becomes criminal.

“If you've got this material, delete it. If you're sharing it, stop.”
