In brief
Tokyo police will use AI to reconstruct traffic accidents faster, cutting on-site inspections by 20+ staff and traffic delays. Tokyo police plan to launch an AI system in January 2028 to reconstruct traffic accidents using 3D spatial data and security camera footage. Originally reported by The Japan Times.
Tokyo police plan new AI system

Tokyo’s Metropolitan Police Department plans to introduce a new system that can reconstruct traffic accidents using artificial intelligence.
System uses 3d spatial data
The system will combine ai with 3d spatial data from accident sites and footage from nearby security cameras.
Reduces on-site inspections
The system reduces the need for lengthy on-site inspections, which require traffic restrictions and often cause congestion and economic losses.
Test launch in june 2027

The MPD plans to test the new system from June 2027 and launch full-scale operations in January 2028.
Current inspection process
Currently, fatal accidents and hit-and-run incidents are investigated through on-site inspections, in which vehicles are positioned as they were at the time of the crash.
System enables simulations
It will also enable simulations from multiple perspectives, including overhead views of collisions and the viewpoints of drivers and pedestrians.
Here's the gist
