AI companies demand phones run huge models

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said leading AI companies told him they need to run hundred-billion-parameter models on phones by 2028, running all the time.

“By 2028, I need to make sure that I have the ability to run at least a hundred billion parameter model into a phone.”

AI companies are entering the phone market

Amon said AI companies are starting to make phones themselves. He cited ByteDance's Doubao phone, made by Nubia, as an example from China, with more coming.

“AI companies are starting to do phones.”

Phones hold data the cloud cannot access

Amon said phones hold personal context, sensor data and apps that AI agents need. He cited OpenClaw as showing how agents plan, route tasks and act for users.

“Humans are not going to go travel to a data center, ring the bell and say, 'Give me some AI.'”

Memory costs are crushing the phone market

Memory prices have risen five to six times, shrinking the smartphone market by twenty percent this year. Mid-range and cheaper phones were hit hardest. Buyers purchase about one point two billion phones yearly.

Amon said Qualcomm will demonstrate 6G at the twenty twenty-eight Los Angeles Olympics, with early deployments expected in twenty twenty-nine and twenty thirty, scaling after.
