Canon gives the EOS R8 a steadier retro sequel
Canon’s EOS R8 Mark II adds in-body stabilization, a boxier film-camera look, and full-frame features at a higher price.
In brief
Canon’s EOS R8 Mark II adds in-body stabilization, a boxier film-camera look, and full-frame features at a higher price. The EOS R8 Mark II is still Canon’s approachable full-frame line, but stabilization, smarter controls, and retro styling push it closer to the R6 tier. Originally reported by The Verge.
A steadier R8

Canon’s EOS R8 Mark II adds in-body stabilization, the big missing feature from the 2023 R8. It weighs 1.2 pounds, still lighter than the EOS R6 Mark III.
Higher price, lower tier
The camera arrives in late October at $1,899 body only, or $2,099 with a 24-50mm stabilized lens. That is above the old R8, but below the $2,799 R6 Mark III.
Same core sensor

Canon kept the 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor from the R6 Mark II. It still uses only an electronic shutter and shoots up to 40fps.
Stabilization gets serious
The new five-axis system offers up to 7.5 stops of shake correction. Pairing it with a stabilized lens can stretch that help even further.
Smarter focus and video
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II can track animals, vehicles, and people, with face priority for up to 10 registered people. Video tops out at 4K/60fps or 1080p at 180fps.
“more tenacious tracking”
A boxier throwback

Canon swapped the old R8’s curves for an angular body inspired by the EOS 650. A new joystick helps pick focus points, and the SD slot moves to the side for tripod use.
2D photos, 3D output
Canon is also releasing a free Windows app that turns dual-pixel autofocus data into 3D photos, cutout 3D models, or short animated perspective clips.
What it means
The EOS R8 Mark II is still Canon’s approachable full-frame line, but stabilization, smarter controls, and retro styling push it closer to the R6 tier.
