Discord's new age check won't ask for your ID
Discord is rolling out automatic age estimation based on account signals instead of requiring video selfies or ID scans.
In brief
Discord is rolling out automatic age estimation based on account signals instead of requiring video selfies or ID scans. Discord switched to a less invasive age verification system that estimates user age from account behavior rather than demanding personal documents. Originally reported by The Verge.
Discord pauses then restarts age checks
Discord halted its age verification system in February after a data breach exposed user photos and IDs. Now it's rolling out a new approach starting today in most countries.
How the new system estimates age
Discord's model analyzes account age, activity levels, connected servers, and communities to assign users to age groups. It doesn't examine messages, calls, or content.
Most users won't need to verify
Discord expects 90 percent of users to be automatically assigned an age group without taking any action. Only those misclassified or unclassifiable will need to verify.
Teens get safety features by default
Users aged 13 to 17 will have content filters, blurred sensitive material, and restricted access to adult servers and messaging features automatically enabled.
Multiple verification options available
If Discord misclassifies you, you can verify via face scan, ID, credit card, Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Google Wallet, or AgeKey credential system.
“We believe meeting age requirements shouldn't require ID checks or selfies for everyone.”
In short
Discord switched to a less invasive age verification system that estimates user age from account behavior rather than demanding personal documents.
