An emergency fix lands

Microsoft has started rolling out an out-of-band update to clean up problems its September Patch Tuesday release caused.
The biggest patch ever
September's update closed nearly 1,000 flaws, a record for Microsoft. It also introduced new bugs that hit businesses, developers, and gamers.
“it also introduced some bugs that have affected businesses, developers, and gamers”
What actually broke
Folder shares on Hyper-V Linux virtual machines stopped working, Remote Desktop Services sessions misbehaved, and some USB audio devices failed.
Who gets the update
The fix covers Windows 11 versions 26H1, 25H2, and 24H2, plus Windows Server 2025 and 2022, Windows 10 LTSC, and Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2.
Emergency updates are routine now
These used to be rare. In January a buggy Windows 11 patch forced four of them, and March brought two more over install failures and sign-in problems.
“In the past it was unusual for Microsoft to issue out-of-band updates to Windows, but it has become far more common this year.”
A pattern through the year
July brought another emergency update for an Intel driver issue that drained battery and slowed machines. Four rounds of cleanup in nine months.
The key point
If you installed September's Patch Tuesday update and something broke, the out-of-band fix is already out. Install it.
