OpenAI discovers hidden bug in conference room

OpenAI found a sophisticated recording device plugged into a TV's USB port in an executive conference room where highly confidential technical, commercial, and strategic information is discussed.
Employee identified and arrested
The employee was identified as Abdulrahman Alfozan, a thirty five year old Saudi national. He was arrested Friday and charged with using or endeavoring to use a device to intercept oral communications.
AI models helped identify the culprit
OpenAI used its AI models to understand the device and identify that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier, according to the company's statement about the incident.
“We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier.”
CCTV footage and a second device

CCTV footage allegedly showed Alfozan near the executive conference room on multiple dates before discovery and appearing to look behind the TV. Security also found a bag with his wallet, ID, and another recording device.
Device planted around September twenty eighth
The device was covered in toilet paper and installed on or around September twenty eighth. Its contents were encrypted. Alfozan did not have access to the executive conference room.
OpenAI fired employee and referred to FBI
OpenAI terminated Alfozan and referred the matter to the FBI. The company says it has no indications he accessed model weights, source code, or customer data. The FBI investigation is ongoing.
“At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data.”
