OpenAI unveiled Dots during its DevDay keynote on Tuesday. The always-on AI assistants can do nearly anything across connected apps in the background while learning your preferences over time.

Dots run on GPT-6 Astra and access thousands of apps

Dots are powered by OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra model and use their own cloud computer to access a web browser and more than four thousand supported apps. You can interact through text or voice calls from ChatGPT on web, desktop, or mobile.

Dots work in Teams, Slack, and soon text message

Dots can connect to Microsoft Teams and Slack, carrying over context from your sessions on other apps and devices. They will soon be able to talk to you over text message as well.

Dots learn and suggest tasks on their own

A developer’s Dot can work on app updates in the background.

Once you give your Dot a task, it messages you with updates and questions while working. Dots learn while they work, allowing them to personalize output and come up with other tasks to complete before you even think to ask.

Safety features let you set custom rules

OpenAI says Dots come with built-in rules for when to act independently, but you can set custom ones that block certain actions or dictate when it should ask for permission. An auto-review feature verifies whether actions comply with custom rules and safety requirements.

Dots roll out to premium ChatGPT users today

Starting today, OpenAI is rolling out Dots to ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise users. Conversations with your Dot won't count toward ChatGPT usage limits. OpenAI is also testing specialist Dots for specific roles inside organizations.

Multiple Dots and scaling coming soon

Multiple Dots and scaling coming soon

For now you can only create one Dot, though OpenAI plans to allow users to deploy multiple agents at once. In the future you'll be able to add more Dots and scale the output of each by increasing its speed or total work per month.

The essence
