Polaroid announced the Mod, a new instant camera that lets photographers experiment beyond basic exposure adjustments. A dial on the lens switches between four creative shooting modes with analog effects captured in-camera.

Price and availability

The Polaroid Mod launches globally starting today for one hundred sixty-nine dollars ninety-nine cents through Polaroid's online store and will be available from other US retailers on October sixth.

Double exposure and split shot modes

Two sample Polaroid instant photos showing in-camera effect like a double exposure.

Two modes combine multiple exposures into one image. Double Exposure layers two images atop each other to blend subjects or scenes together. Split Shot divides images into two halves using a rotating accessory that blocks half the lens at a time.

Light painting and motion freeze

Light Painting uses a long exposure to capture light trails from a flashlight, sparkler or other bright source while the camera sits on a stable tripod. Motion Freeze merges a slow shutter exposure with a sharp image captured by the camera's flash.

Film compatibility and battery life

The Polaroid Mod works with Polaroid i-Type and six hundred film stocks in color or black and white. On a full charge of its seven hundred fifty milliamp hour battery it can shoot up to fifteen packs of film, which is up to one hundred twenty exposures.

Lens system and focus

Andrew Liszewski

The Mod uses a fixed focus two-lens system with a one hundred three millimetre standard lens and a ninety-five millimetre portrait lens that can be swapped as needed depending on the subject.

The takeaway

Polaroid launched the Mod instant camera with four creative shooting modes controlled by a dial on the lens, available globally from September twenty-ninth for one hundred sixty-nine dollars ninety-nine cents.
