Reddit tightens Old Reddit rules

Reddit is limiting access to its classic interface. Starting in the next few months, users must be logged in and have used Old Reddit within the last six months to continue accessing it.

The six-month window targets bots

Reddit says the six-month requirement covers the vast majority of Old Reddit users. The change is designed to block bots using new accounts and those accessing abandoned or unused accounts.

RSS feeds will shut down

RSS feeds will shut down

Reddit will stop supporting RSS feeds on November thirteenth because RSS is now a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse. The company suggested Discord Relay as a replacement for moderation help.

“If you use RSS for feeds outside of a community you moderate, there is no replacement.”

CEO cited abuse as reason

In May twenty twenty-five, CEO Steve Huffman said Reddit would keep Old Reddit online as long as people used it. But in August, Huffman said the experience was being used by everyone who spams, scrapes, or does anything bad on Reddit.

“we need to make some changes”

Login requirement helped but wasn't enough

Reddit's earlier login requirement for Old Reddit reduced scraping and automated abuse, but still allowed any logged-in account to access it, including those with no prior Old Reddit use. Moderators remain exempt from the new rules.

Public API access ends in March

Jay Peters

Reddit will remove API access for users who haven't registered their apps by January twelfth, twenty twenty-seven. All remaining public API access will end in March twenty twenty-seven as part of the broader data access restrictions.

The one thing

Reddit is restricting Old Reddit access to accounts active in the past six months to block bots and scrapers, and will shut down RSS feeds on November thirteenth.
