Fifty states, one mailbox

Students at New Madrid Elementary in Missouri are collecting postcards from all 50 states to mark America's 250th anniversary.
The map so far
Cards have arrived from Texas, Oregon, California, South Dakota, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Washington DC, New York, Pennsylvania and Iowa.
“We got several from Georgia right off the bat”
It started on Facebook
Counselor Casey Rost posted the idea online. Families, friends and total strangers started mailing cards in, and the pile kept growing.
“Everybody's excited about the postcards when they come in and they're like, oh, we got another one”
Each card is a lesson
Every day the students pair new mail with a fact about American history. One morning they learned Pennsylvania is misspelled on the Constitution, and they already had a Pennsylvania card.
“We're able to just kind of draw some connections for our students”
Kids pick favorites
Adley Brown likes the California and Arizona cards for their trees and is still waiting on Virginia. Lamar Owens named Arizona. Others chose Georgia and Alaska.
“I haven't seen one from Virginia yet, and I kind of want to see one from there”
How to send one
Mail a postcard to New Madrid Elementary, 955 US Highway 61, New Madrid, MO 63869. One card from a missing state finishes a kid's map.
“They're thinking about our country and where they want to go”
In short
A Facebook post asking for postcards became a daily geography and history lesson for a whole elementary school.
