In brief
A request for water in a gated Scottsdale community ended with an 80-year-old man accused of shooting a salesman in the back. A trespassing dispute does not by itself justify lethal force, and investigators are now weighing conflicting accounts of the shooting. Originally reported by Valleynewslive.
A salesman is shot
Police say Patrick McBride, 80, shot a door-to-door window-washing salesman in a Scottsdale gated community. The victim was hospitalized with a spinal injury and no feeling in his legs.
He asked for water
The salesman had stopped at McBride's home to ask for water. McBride told police he became suspicious and believed the man might be recording or photographing his house.
McBride went looking
After the salesman left on a Segway, he stayed nearby to search for a missing wallet. McBride told detectives he and his wife split up to confirm the man had left, while McBride carried a handgun.
Two accounts clash
McBride said the man rode toward him and raised a phone, then the gun fired during contact. The victim said he was turning away when he was shot in the lower back.
“He made a move at me, I told him to leave”
Police found gun damage
Investigators found McBride's handgun with a cracked, partly broken trigger guard. McBride said he did not mean to shoot and had picked up the shell casing to preserve evidence.
Self-defense is questioned
McBride claimed self-defense, but attorney Ben Taylor said pursuing someone with a gun weakens that argument. A judge set McBride's bond at $150,000.
“Just because a person’s trespassing on your property doesn’t give you the right to go out there and shoot them”
The big picture
A trespassing dispute does not by itself justify lethal force, and investigators are now weighing conflicting accounts of the shooting.
