A call about street racers
Sunday around 6:50 p.m., Cass County deputies were sent to Fargo's Heritage Hills area after reports of a group driving recklessly.
120 in a 45 zone
A deputy clocked a Chrysler 300 heading north on South University Drive at 76th Avenue doing 120 mph where the limit is 45.
The deputy let him go
Emergency lights went on and the Chrysler took off. The deputy chose not to pursue, citing safety.
“The deputy did not pursue the vehicle due to safety considerations.”
Wrong way, two impacts
Twenty minutes later the Chrysler was in the southbound lanes heading north near 15th Avenue South. It hit a Harley-Davidson turning west, then a southbound Mercedes-Benz.
Two fighting for their lives
The 24-year-old Moorhead driver and a 19-year-old Fargo motorcyclist both have life-threatening injuries. Neither wore a seatbelt or helmet. Two passengers were hurt; the Mercedes driver was not.
Felonies and a denial
The driver faces DUI, criminal vehicular injury, and two felony reckless endangerment counts, plus felony fleeing. The racing crew 701's Most Wanted says it had no event and no connection.
“The group did not host, organize, promote, or participate in any event connected to the incident.”
What it means
The deputy called off the chase for safety, and the driver kept going until he crashed into two vehicles and put two people in critical condition.
