In brief
Horace advanced five local assessment projects, while residents warned the costs could force some people out. Horace is moving several street, storm, water, and sewer projects forward, but residents remain worried about who can afford the assessments. Originally reported by Valleynewslive.
Five projects reviewed
Horace officials discussed five special assessments tied to storm and street work. Some projects also include water and sewer improvements.
Most passed unchanged
The commission approved all five projects without changes, except 64th Avenue. That project will rezone two properties.
Why rezoning changed
Two 64th Avenue parcels had been charged with a mixed-use multiplier. Officials removed it because the parcels are single-family and not intended for mixed-use development.
“The policy was not created with that in mind.”
Residents got the floor
People near the projects asked questions and spoke about the assessments. One resident said the city and citizens both face hard financial choices.
“I wish, you wish, there could be another way to do this.”
Older residents worry
Another resident said special assessments hit older people especially hard. They warned some may have to leave if Horace becomes too costly.
“A lot of us are going to have to leave”
One meeting left
Tuesday was the second step in Horace's three-part assessment process. A meeting on the Wall Avenue project is set for Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. at Horace Meeting House.
The big picture
Horace is moving several street, storm, water, and sewer projects forward, but residents remain worried about who can afford the assessments.
