In brief
After her 2-year-old son was killed by a vehicle, Jessica Fernandez wants answers and may seek legal action. Darwin Olson’s mother says the closed investigation left her with unanswered questions, even after officials decided no criminal charges fit the case. Originally reported by Valleynewslive.
A call of panic
Jessica Fernandez says her mother called around 7 a.m. asking if she had picked up 2-year-old Darwin. When Fernandez said no, her mother screamed that he was missing.
Stopped at barricades

Fernandez rushed toward the area but was stopped by emergency barricades. When she asked an officer if her son was alive, he told her no.
““Is he alive?””
The crash site
Authorities said Darwin was found injured in the roadway near Lake and Sunset roads in Ironwood on March 19. A report came in around 5 a.m.
No criminal charges
Investigators identified the driver, but the Gogebic County prosecutor chose not to file charges after reviewing the case with the sheriff’s office.
Answers feel out of reach
Fernandez says she was told little about the driver and still has questions. The sheriff’s office says her attorney received the full police report.
““No one wants to answer them for me,””
Seeking justice for Darwin
Neighbors gathered at a candlelight vigil outside the county courthouse. Fernandez disputes the decision and says she may pursue private legal action.
