Nashville's airport may soon be Dolly's
A 6-0 vote put Dolly Parton's name on the path to Nashville's airport, and 175,000 signatures pushed it there.
In brief
A 6-0 vote put Dolly Parton's name on the path to Nashville's airport, and 175,000 signatures pushed it there. The vote starts the renaming, it doesn't finish it: cost, timeline, final name, and even the airport's own naming policy are all still open. Originally reported by Valleynewslive.
A unanimous vote

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority voted 6-0 on Friday to start renaming Nashville International Airport in honor of Dolly Parton.
175,000 signatures behind it
Gov. Bill Lee, Mayor Freddie O'Connell and the Metro City Council all backed the change, and a public petition drew more than 175,000 names.
What the vote actually starts
The board now has to study the cost and set a timeline. No final name has been picked yet, and officials say specifics come in the coming months.
A policy in the way
Airport rules generally say properties should be named for people dead at least two years. Parton died days before the governor announced the plan, so the policy may need revisiting.
A love letter back
O'Connell said Parton had been working with the city on SongTeller, a hotel and museum she called her love letter to Nashville.
“Now it's our turn to share a love letter to Dolly”
Why her name
The petitioners say no one else unites Tennessee the same way, calling her the state's proudest common ground.
“There is no other person who could bring us all together that makes us feel proud”
The headline
The vote starts the renaming, it doesn't finish it: cost, timeline, final name, and even the airport's own naming policy are all still open.
