Trump: I'm the only AI guardrail you need
Two AI CEOs asked the industry to slow down. Trump answered by nominating himself as the safety layer.
In brief
Two AI CEOs asked the industry to slow down. Trump answered by nominating himself as the safety layer. The safety debate has moved out of the labs and into politics, where the loudest answer to "who watches AI?" is now "me." Originally reported by Variety.
The CEOs hit the brakes
Over the weekend, the heads of Anthropic and OpenAI both called on the industry to slow AI development over safety concerns.
Trump has a different answer

Instead of backing new protections, the president downplayed the need for any guardrails on AI beyond himself.
One guardrail, one person
On Truth Social Monday, he named the only control AI needs: a strong, smart, high-IQ president. The U.S. has that, he wrote, in spades.
“The only control or 'guardrails' that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT”
Taking credit for the stops
He claimed his administration has already blocked AI "people" from doing bad or potentially bad things, and said it will keep doing so.
“The Trump Administration has stopped AI 'people' from doing bad, or potentially bad, 'things'”
The Dario jab

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei got singled out by name, cast as someone now posing as harmless after the fact.
“who is now pretending to be a 'perfect little angel'”
Safety is now a fight
A technical argument about how fast to build has turned into a public contest over who gets to say when AI has gone too far.
The short version
The safety debate has moved out of the labs and into politics, where the loudest answer to "who watches AI?" is now "me."
