Why Brazil's new distribution fund matters

Distribution is the film industry's weakest link, and Screen Brasil is handing out money to fix it.

In brief

Distribution is the film industry's weakest link, and Screen Brasil is handing out money to fix it. Applications for the first cycle of Screen Brasil's second funding edition close Oct. 2. Originally reported by Variety.

Distribution is the weak link

Distribution is the weak link

Across the film industry, almost everyone agrees distribution is where the chain breaks. It is the part of the business that struggles most to stand on its own.

“Distribution, by common consent, has become the weakest link in the whole of the film industry.”

Public money keeps it alive

Strip out government support and distribution would barely function as a business at all. The sector runs on subsidy, not on its own margins.

“If it weren't for public-sector aid, it would hardly exist.”

Split rights eased the squeeze

Deals that split rights instead of demanding minimum guarantees have taken some financial pressure off distributors. It helps, but the math is still tight.

“Every single dollar still counts, however.”

Screen Brasil steps in

Against that backdrop, Screen Brasil's distribution grants land like a windfall. The program is now into its second funding edition.

“Screen Brasil ... offers manna from heaven.”

The second edition runs in two cycles. Applications for the first close on Oct. 2, and the program has already produced early results, with 'Papaya' among the films backed.

Europe is watching

Sales agents and distributors across Europe would take a scheme like this in a heartbeat. Few markets offer distributors support on these terms.

“Many sales agents and distributors in Europe dream of being beneficiaries from such schemes.”

What it means

Applications for the first cycle of Screen Brasil's second funding edition close Oct. 2.
