Mapping Europe's synodal future

Mapping Europe's synodal future

187 participants from 31 countries met in Puchberg, Austria, to discuss how the Church can become more synodal. They used the "Conversations in the Spirit" method from the Synod on Synodality.

Secularization as purification

Prague theologian Tomáš Halík argued that Europe's secularization has weakened the Church but also freed it from political power. This loss of privilege could purify the Church.

Baptism's invisible influence

Conference chair Klara Csiszar asked why baptism, which gives equal dignity to all, has so little visible impact on Church life. It should be the foundation for shared responsibility.

“If nothing is truly greater than baptism, why does it so often have so little visible influence on our life as a Church?”

Listening means being interrupted

The Church needs to pay attention to people's actual questions and let their experiences change how it acts. Listening requires allowing yourself to be interrupted.

“Listening means allowing oneself to be interrupted.”

Europe's wounds and hopes

War, displacement, abuse and loneliness were discussed as Europe's wounds. Against these, participants identified longings for peace, community, dignity and justice.

Young people as co-creators

Young people shouldn't be seen merely as targets for programs. They are believers and questioners who can help shape Church life and take on responsibility.

Leadership as service, not possession

Participants called for clearer processes for consultation and decision-making. Church office is service to unity and mission, not a possession.

“An ecclesial office is not a possession. It is service, service to unity, service to discernment and service to the mission of the whole Church.”

A European Church Forum ahead

Csiszar proposed establishing a European Church Forum for interpreting the signs of the times. Results will feed into consultations before the 2028 universal Synod assembly.

The key point

Baptism should be the foundation for equal dignity and shared responsibility in Church leadership and decision-making.
