Everyone but Trump is worried about AI

Lawmakers, AI bosses, and voters are all reaching for the brakes. The president is posting in all caps.

In brief

Lawmakers, AI bosses, and voters are all reaching for the brakes. The president is posting in all caps. Congress is stalled, so AI rules would have to come from the White House, and Trump has said he won't write them. Originally reported by Vox.

Trump calls it a hoax

Republicans Gather In Dallas For Inaugural Midterm Convention

As policymakers and tech CEOs debate AI guardrails, Trump spent Monday posting that the only guardrail AI needs is a smart president, and that AI destroying humanity is made up.

“AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX.”

One resignation changed the room

Anthropic employee Jacob Coxon quit publicly, saying AI giants were racing toward self-improving superintelligence. The warning pushed the debate out of research circles and into Washington.

“gambling with our lives”

Both parties start talking brakes

Since the resignation, lawmakers from both parties and the heads of top AI companies have begun discussing slowing development down, an idea that was fringe a week earlier.

The golden goose defense

Trump's reasoning mixes China and the economy. He keeps invoking the need to protect the "golden goose" to justify backing AI companies and new data center construction.

“There is a SICK conspiracy going on against AI and Data Centers, and the only one that is happy about it is China.”

Voters hate the data centers

Voters hate the data centers

One poll found about 75 percent of Americans strongly oppose data center construction near their homes. Politicians in both parties are racing to voice that opposition.

The only door is shut

Congress is unlikely to act soon, so the fastest route to AI regulation runs through the executive branch. Trump says he is gleefully uninterested in using it.

What matters most

Congress is stalled, so AI rules would have to come from the White House, and Trump has said he won't write them.
