Kiwibit's camera feeder impresses, but paywalls disappoint

The Feeder 2 Pro delivers stunning 4K autofocus images, but Kiwibit is locking most features behind a ninety-dollar annual subscription.

In brief

The Feeder 2 Pro delivers stunning 4K autofocus images, but Kiwibit is locking most features behind a ninety-dollar annual subscription. Kiwibit's Feeder 2 Pro offers exceptional camera hardware with autofocus in 4K HDR, but increasingly paywalls features that competitors include free, limiting its appeal beyond…

Kiwibit quietly outpacing the leaders

While Birdfy and Birdbuddy dominate the smart feeder market, Kiwibit has spent multiple generations refining its models to match or exceed them in engineering and design.

The Beako set the bar high

Kiwibit's first feeder, the Beako, impressed with a robust plastic body, removable dual-sided seed reservoir, and three-minute video captures, with most features free.

The Feeder 2 fixed the solar problem

The Feeder 2 fixed the solar problem

The Beako's optional solar panel failed after six weeks. The Feeder 2 made solar standard on all units, increased output from four point four to five watts, and solved the longevity issue.

The Pro adds autofocus in 4K HDR

The Feeder 2 Pro features phase detection autofocus in 4K HDR, one of the most impressive smart feeder camera offerings on the market.

Free tier is bare bones

Without a subscription, the Feeder 2 Pro offers the same camera quality but only a bare-bones feed of video captures with no AI identification of bird species.

Ninety dollars a year unlocks most features

Kiwibit Plus costs ninety dollars annually and adds AI ID, sixty-day cloud recording, gallery views, and roundup reports. Most feeders at this price point include lifetime subscriptions.

The autofocus sometimes startles birds

The lens zooming in and out to focus was noticed by multiple birds, who either stopped eating to watch warily or flew away, though not frequently enough to regret the feature.

AI ID makes frequent mistakes

The AI identification is wrong a hefty percentage of the time. Fish crows, Cape May warblers, and pileated woodpeckers appeared in western Washington where they do not exist.

“fish crows, Cape May warblers, mangrove warblers, red fox sparrows, and grackles are not found in western Washington state, where I live, but according to the Kiwibit app they are frequent visitors”

The app is confusing and cluttered

Unlike Birdfy and Birdbuddy, Kiwibit's subscription app is chaotic, cramming information into too many places with tile views, feeds, live view, and multiple calendar options.

The camera captures exceptional images

The dual-lens camera records 4K at fifteen frames per second and 1080p at one hundred twenty frames per second to SD card, producing crisp images rivaling budget action cameras.

Hardware design is excellent

The Feeder 2 Pro has dual solar panels that stay charged on cloudy days, a removable five thousand two hundred milliamp hour battery, a removable dual-compartment one point seven liter seed hopper, and IP sixty five water resistance.

Best for serious bird photographers only

The Feeder 2 Pro costs two hundred thirty dollars and requires a ninety dollar annual subscription for the full experience. Casual bird-watchers can find more polished apps for less than half the price.

“I don't love that the full experience costs almost $100 extra per year, but it's been fun to collect and share truly camera-quality images.”

Here's the gist

Kiwibit's Feeder 2 Pro offers exceptional camera hardware with autofocus in 4K HDR, but increasingly paywalls features that competitors include free, limiting its appeal beyond serious bird photographers.
