Think tank plots to block Democrats from Congress

Democrats expected to win midterms
Polls indicate Democrats are poised to win big in the midterm elections. The Trump administration is already attempting to mount legal challenges in certain races and cast doubt on the results.
Think tank proposes blocking Democrats
The Center for Renewing America, a right-wing think tank, published a post suggesting that winning Democratic candidates could be prevented from holding office even if they win their elections.
The Red-Green Alliance theory

The post argues that candidates from a purported Red-Green Alliance between neo-Marxist progressives and anti-Western Muslims can and should be kept from being seated in Congress.
Russell Vought leads the think tank
The Center for Renewing America was founded by Russell Vought, one of the main architects of Project twenty twenty-five and now the director of the Office of Management and Budget.
Vought's history of anti-Muslim comments
Vought faced criticism for anti-Muslim comments when nominated for OMB director during the first Trump administration. He once said Muslims had a deficient theology and do not know God.
“deficient theology and do not know God”
The Squad and other named targets

The Red-Green Alliance allegedly includes the Squad: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley, and Ilhan Omar. It also includes New York mayor Zohran Mamdani and Michigan senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
Legal experts say strategy would fail
Constitutional law professors say the plan contorts basic norms and would be quickly identified and quashed by courts. Religious tests for office are explicitly prohibited by the Constitution.
“This is another attempt to contort and twist basic norms that have never been used this way for their own partisan purposes”
Viability depends on election margins
If Democrats win by narrow margins, Republicans could dispute results to maintain Senate control. Larger Democratic victories would make the strategy unviable and preposterous.
House could refuse to seat winners
If Republicans maintain House majority, they could vote to refuse to seat incoming Democrats. In nineteen sixty-seven, the House refused to seat Adam Clayton Powell, Junior, a Democrat from Harlem.
Threat remains despite legal weakness
Even if the legal strategy fails, the administration could attempt it anyway, creating fear among opponents. Trump has dismantled guardrails and norms meant to protect against such actions.
“Even if they don't get away with it directly, threatening and shutting down opponents creates fear”
The big picture
The Center for Renewing America proposes blocking elected Democrats from Congress by claiming their beliefs violate the Constitution, a strategy legal experts say would fail in court but signals an attempt to undermine democratic norms.
