China's pullback drags clean tech down 17%

One country's switch from subsidies to market pricing wiped out clean energy growth everywhere else.

In brief

One country's switch from subsidies to market pricing wiped out clean energy growth everywhere else. Global clean tech spending is now hostage to Chinese policy: when Beijing pulls back, the rest of the world can't cover the gap. Originally reported by Yahoo Finance.

Clean tech spending fell 17%

Clean tech spending fell 17%

Investment in clean technologies dropped 17% in the first half of the year, according to a Rhodium Group report. The cause sits almost entirely in one country.

Growth elsewhere wasn't enough

Wind and solar investment rose across other regions, but China spends so far ahead of everyone else that its decline swallowed all of that growth.

“the decline was driven by China, the world's largest cleantech investor”

Subsidies gave way to markets

Subsidies gave way to markets

Beijing moved new renewable generation to market-based pricing in 2025, triggering a rush to install before the deadline and then an uneven drop-off after it.

“a rush of installations ahead of the deadline, followed by an uneven pullback”

EV tax breaks expired too

China started phasing out consumer purchase-tax exemptions for electric vehicles in January 2026, pulling demand support out from under the sector.

A $133 billion hole

Chinese alternative energy and electric transport investment fell 49%, or $133 billion. Its share of global clean tech spending slid from 52% to 39% in six months.

India and Europe lean in

India keeps building out wind, solar and EVs to close the gap, while the EU subsidises every transition technology it can. Tight, pricey hydrocarbons are pushing some countries to swap gas for solar.

The headline

Global clean tech spending is now hostage to Chinese policy: when Beijing pulls back, the rest of the world can't cover the gap.
