Old GPUs still rent. That's not the whole CoreWeave story

A rental benchmark says NVIDIA's aging chips still earn money, but earning rent and earning a return are two different things.

In brief

A rental benchmark says NVIDIA's aging chips still earn money, but earning rent and earning a return are two different things. Useful hardware is only step one. For CoreWeave, the question is whether rent clears power, operations and a mountain of interest. Originally reported by Yahoo Finance.

Old chips still pay

Old chips still pay

NVIDIA's pitch against fast obsolescence is simple: buyers keep renting the older stuff. The harder question is how much of that rent turns into an actual return.

“older accelerators still command rental prices”

The September numbers

A transaction-based rental benchmark settled September 7 with the H100 SXM at $3.17 per GPU-hour and the older A100 SXM4 at $1.05. Market prices, not CoreWeave's own.

Long life cuts both ways

A longer revenue life makes the original purchase easier to justify. It also lets customers who can run tasks on older gear put off buying new ones.

“NVIDIA still needs new systems to offer advantages worth paying for”

Rent has to cover a lot

CoreWeave lives on utilization. Keeping accelerators busy stretches the earning window, but that income still has to cover power, facilities, operations, financing and the hardware.

Q2 shows the gap

Second-quarter revenue hit $2.575 billion with adjusted EBITDA of $1.510 billion. The company still posted a $626 million net loss against $640 million of net interest expense.

“Contract terms, utilization, operating costs and financing can produce different results for two owners of the same GPU.”

The shorts disagree

On August 14, short interest was 1.23% of NVIDIA's float versus 16.92% of CoreWeave's. That gap measures positioning, not which investment case is right.

“durability is only an input”

What to remember

Useful hardware is only step one. For CoreWeave, the question is whether rent clears power, operations and a mountain of interest.
