Two AI CEOs just talked their own trade down

Amodei and Altman called for slowing AI development, and the investors who funded the boom are the ones exposed.

In brief

Amodei and Altman called for slowing AI development, and the investors who funded the boom are the ones exposed. The people who sold AI as an unstoppable growth story are now asking for the brakes, and the market has to reprice on their word alone. Originally reported by Yahoo Finance.

Forty-eight hours, one reversal

Dario Amodei and Sam Altman both went public within two days saying the technology they built is moving too fast to stay safe.

Amodei says slow down

Amodei says slow down

In a 3,800 word Saturday essay, Amodei argued that pacing capability gains, not just funding safety work, is what keeps risk prevention from falling behind.

“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of A.I. models.”

Altman agrees with his rival

Altman posted on X that pacing the frontier has been a main topic inside OpenAI, and committed to independent evaluators with employee-level access.

“I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier.”

They sold the opposite story

For two years the same two men pitched AI to venture investors as a money printer, promising decades of explosive returns.

The guardrails were their job

If these models are close to running loose across the internet and into hacker hands, the missing safety work and the confused lawmakers trace back to the builders.

Investors eat the downside

Amodei and Altman can delay their IPOs and cash-outs. Institutions and retail traders holding the AI trade have no such option.

The bull chain breaks

The narrative ran hyperscaler spending into Nvidia, Micron and data center builders. Slower development means smaller orders down the whole line.

A dip or a repricing

Jason Calacanis predicted a 10% Monday drop. Dan Ives expects a fast rebound, arguing $5 trillion of planned AI spending does not move on a blog post.

“Brace for impact, folks. @DarioAmodei just unwound the AI trade with a blog post.”

The main idea

The people who sold AI as an unstoppable growth story are now asking for the brakes, and the market has to reprice on their word alone.
