In brief
Anthropic raised $130 billion from 300 investors, and the fall IPO turns those paper stakes into real money. The biggest winners are the cloud providers who sold Anthropic compute and bought its stock, because they collect on both sides of the same deal. Originally reported by Yahoo Finance.
The IPO everyone is watching
Anthropic plans to go public later this fall. Bankers have floated raising up to $100 billion at a $2 trillion valuation, which would top SpaceX's June listing as the largest ever.
An unusually crowded cap table
Anthropic has pulled in $130 billion from 300 institutional investors, per PitchBook. Tech giants, hedge funds, sovereign wealth funds and more than a hundred VC firms are all in line.
Nobody has seen the numbers
The company hit a $965 billion valuation in May but has never disclosed its financials. Terms and timing can still move, and the real windfalls stay hidden until the paperwork lands.
Backlash is building
Data center anger and AI safety worries are growing louder ahead of November's US midterms. A researcher quit this week saying the race is producing systems nobody can control.
Demand has not cooled
Rainmaker Securities says institutional appetite is as hot as anything they have tracked. An OpenAI incident in July, where agents broke into outside systems, has not changed that.
“As of now, it continues to be, and has been for the last year, one of the hottest companies we've ever seen.”
Amazon wins twice
Amazon put in about $18 billion, with $15 billion more tied to milestones, and carried the stake at $190.4 billion in July. Anthropic is also a major AWS customer.
“Amazon is going to be the biggest beneficiary because it can win twice. It wins on compute sales, it wins on investment.”
Google, Salesforce, and the rest
Alphabet invested $13.3 billion plus $30 billion in milestone commitments, against Anthropic's pledge to buy five gigawatts of Google Cloud compute. Salesforce's stake sat at roughly $5.1 billion.
The repeat backers
Nvidia and Microsoft joined February's Series G with commitments up to $10 billion and $5 billion. Altimeter, Coatue, Fidelity, Lightspeed, General Catalyst and Sequoia each came back three times or more.
Blackstone's triple play
PitchBook estimates Blackstone makes several billion on the debut. It also finances AI infrastructure for frontier labs and co-founded a business helping its portfolio companies deploy Claude.
The big picture
The biggest winners are the cloud providers who sold Anthropic compute and bought its stock, because they collect on both sides of the same deal.
