## Why witches in TV matter
TV fans often picture teen melodramas and sketchy special effects when they hear 'witches', but the genre has produced some of the most ambitious fantasy television of the last three decades.
## American Horror Story: Coven (2013-2014)
Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, and Emma Roberts star in a show about warring witches in New Orleans, with Jessica Lange as Fiona Goode, the reigning Supreme of a dwindling coven.
## Charmed (1998-2006)
Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, and Alyssa Milano play the Halliwell sisters, who fight demons and have strong family dynamics over eight seasons.
## The Magicians (2015-2020)
Jason Ralph plays Quentin Coldwater, a depressed grad student accepted to Brakebills University, where magic is dangerous and trauma is real.
## A Discovery of Witches (2018-2022)
Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode star as Diana Bishop, a historian and reluctant witch, and Matthew Clairmont, a centuries-old vampire biochemist.
## Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018-2020)
Kiernan Shipka plays Sabrina Spellman, a half-witch, half-mortal teenager caught between two worlds, with Miranda Otto and Lucy Davis as her aunts.
## Agatha All Along (2024)
Kathryn Hahn plays Agatha Harkness, a witch stripped of her powers, who assembles a coven to walk the Witches' Road to regain her magic.
## The Wheel of Time (2021-2025)
Rosamund Pike stars as Moiraine, a magic-wielding warrior diplomat searching for the Dragon Reborn in a world with a complex magic system.
## The Witcher (2019-Present)
Henry Cavill plays Geralt of Rivia, a mutant monster hunter navigating a continent where humans are worse than creatures he's paid to kill.
## Why these shows work
Each show takes witchcraft seriously, with magic mattering to the story and characters, and the best ones avoid stereotypes and special effects.
