## A Friday evening derailment
A regional train carrying 186 passengers from Rouen to Caen came off the tracks at Cleon, in the Seine-Maritime department of northwestern France. Forty-four people were injured.
## Airlifted to hospital
An 18-year-old woman was among the injured and was flown by helicopter to Rouen University Hospital, police said.
## Something was on the track
Police found a piece of rail lying on the track. A spokeswoman for the national police communications service, SICOP, said it was probably linked to the derailment.

## Accident or sabotage
Investigators are still working out whether the circumstances were accidental or deliberate. The prosecutor's office is holding back from any conclusion.
## France has been here before
A 2013 derailment at Bretigny-sur-Orge, south of Paris, killed seven. In 2015, a TGV on a test run derailed at Eckwersheim near Strasbourg, killing 11.
## A bad year for European rail
In January, two high-speed trains crashed at Adamuz in southern Spain, killing 46 people and injuring more than 100, according to the Andalusian regional government.
## Key takeaway

Police found a piece of rail on the track and say it is probably linked to the derailment, but nobody has ruled between accident and sabotage yet.
