## From counsel to office
Billy Graham gave presidents spiritual counsel. Franklin Graham gave the political arena a loud public voice. Now a third generation could hold an actual government post.
## The nomination
Trump has nominated Cissie Graham Lynch as U.S. Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom. The Senate list records her as Jane Lynch of North Carolina, referred September 14.
## Her answer on X
Lynch called the nomination an honor and asked people to pray she would serve with excellence and protect religious freedom if the Senate confirms her.

> I would consider it a great honor and privilege to do so.
## Her father's case for her
Franklin Graham announced it himself, pointing to her travel and years of study on religious persecution rather than to the family name.

> Cissie is uniquely qualified for this, she has traveled the world and been a student of this issue for many years.
## Every president, Truman to Obama
Billy Graham's official obituary says he prayed with every U.S. president from Harry Truman through Barack Obama. Six Democrats, six Republicans.
## Trust, not a title
Meeting or praying with a president never made Graham that president's regular adviser, and it never put him inside an administration. His influence ran on personal trust.
## What Bush credited him with
George W. Bush traced their friendship to 1985 and said Graham's teaching helped start his faith journey and helped him quit drinking.

> His love for Christ and his gentle soul helped open hearts to the Word, including mine.
## Prayers at the podium
He gave inaugural prayers for George H.W. Bush in 1989 and Bill Clinton in 1993, and spoke at Washington National Cathedral after the September 11 attacks.

> Help them always to see the office to which they've been elected as a sacred trust from you.
## The Nixon problem
Graham advised Nixon on reaching Christians during his campaigns and vouched publicly for his character. Watergate and the tapes showed what that closeness cost.
## He later regretted it
Graham told Christianity Today he would have steered clear of politics. He ministered across party lines but also made political calls he came to doubt.

> would have steered clear of politics
## Cissie's own record
She spoke at the 2020 Republican National Convention, sat on Trump's evangelical advisory board in his first term, and has worked with Samaritan's Purse since 2010.
## A universal right to defend
The 1998 law covers Christians, Jews, Muslims, other faiths and people with no religion at all. The job means defending beliefs unlike her own, while serving a president she has backed.
## Key takeaway

Praying for a president, endorsing one, and serving in that president's administration are three different jobs, and the Graham family has now done all three.
