## Teen killed by twice-deported driver
Anya Varfolomeeva, 19, died in a 2021 Orange County car crash caused by Oscar Eduardo Ortega Anguiano, who had been deported in 2016 and 2021 and was driving under the influence.
## Father testifies on Capitol Hill
Anatoly Varfolomeev described himself as angry and grieving while testifying before lawmakers Tuesday about his daughter's death and the lack of response from state officials.

> It is outrageous
## Driver had no valid license
The driver was an illegal immigrant and repeat offender who had previously served prison time, was deported twice, and did not have a valid California driver's license.
## Varfolomeev rebukes sanctuary policies
The grieving father called for an end to sanctuary policies, saying lawmakers should have united long ago on action to make Americans safer instead of presenting partial stories.

> To me, they should have agreed a long time ago on a united sort of action
## Democrats defend immigration system
Representatives Pramila Jayapal and Summer Lee suggested the hearing focused on political messaging rather than solutions, with Jayapal calling for modernizing immigration law and Lee criticizing enforcement.
## Family came legally, daughter was American
Varfolomeev pushed back against conflating immigrants and illegal immigrants, noting his family came to the U.S. legally and Anya was born after they became citizens.

> She was a regular American girl that was killed
## Key takeaway

Anatoly Varfolomeev is calling for policy changes after his daughter Anya was killed in a 2021 crash by a driver who had been deported twice and was driving under the influence.
