## Whistler fan theory
A fan theory claims Eddie died in Whistler and returns as a ghost.

> The room erupted. I mean, erupted. People were screaming (in a good way, but still, screaming)... We seriously almost started a fistfight in the parking lot.
## Ann Patchett's response
Patchett compared the theory to The Sixth Sense while responding with humor.

> I am somebody who’s like ‘free to be you and me, your interpretation is completely valid.’ NO! No.
## Whistler's real life
Whistler isn't autobiographical, Patchett insists, despite fan speculation.

> This is what happens.
## Eddie's backstory
Daphne reunites with former stepfather Eddie after 40-year car crash.

> The two hadn’t seen each other since they were in a harrowing winter car crash four decades earlier.
## Author's past response
Patchett previously shut down Whistler's autobiographical claims.

> She never met Mike anyway. This is what happens.
## Zibby Owens interview
Patchett interviewed by Zibby Owens at Temple Emanu-El in NYC.

> There was that Bruce Willis movie, The Sixth Sense, where it turns out he’s dead the whole time.
## Real-life Eddie
Eddie modeled after Patchett's friend Jim Fox who died at 85.

> Jim Fox lived a long life before dying of cancer at the age of 85.
## Fan theory impact
Fan theory divides readers and sparks community discussion.

> Don’t let them tell you books are dead.
## Key takeaway

Ann Patchett denies Eddie's ghost theory in Whistler, comparing it to The Sixth Sense.
