## Arteta’s Warning
Mikel Arteta downplays Max Dowman’s potential to match Lamine Yamal’s European feats due to Premier League physical demands.

> What we have to do is look after him, he’s 16 years old, you don’t see that in this league
## Dowman’s Carabao Cup Performance
Max Dowman scored twice in a 90-minute Carabao Cup match against Ipswich Town, becoming the second 16-year-old to score twice for a Premier League club.
## Dowman’s Record-Breaking Age
Dowman, who celebrates his next birthday on New Year’s Eve, has already broken multiple English youth records.
## Rooney’s Exception
Wayne Rooney, the last 16-year-old to score twice in a Carabao Cup match for a Premier League club, was picked in 37 of Everton’s 42 fixtures that season.
## Dowman vs. Yamal Stats
At 16 years and 258 days, Dowman has 14 appearances, 5 starts, and 3 goals, compared to Yamal’s 46 appearances, 23 starts, and 8 goals.
## Yamal’s Context
Lamine Yamal broke through in Barcelona’s financial crisis, where Xavi Hernández prioritized his talent over the club’s need for a consistent starter.
## Arsenal’s Competition
Arsenal’s first team has multiple established players competing for minutes, including captain Martin Ødegaard and $90.9 million recruit Eberechi Eze.
## Premier League Youth Minutes
Premier League clubs gave players aged 16 or under just 167 minutes across the 2025, 26 campaign, with Dowman accounting for 157 of those minutes.
## Dowman’s Age Record
Dowman narrowly missed Cesc Fàbregas’s record of 16 years and 212 days as the youngest scorer for a top-flight club in the Carabao Cup.
## Arteta’s Context
Arteta emphasizes that the Premier League’s physical demands require careful preparation before throwing young players into high-pressure situations.
## Key takeaway

Premier League’s physicality limits young stars’ rapid progression compared to European leagues.
