## A famous address
To Gen Z, 1057 Lexington Avenue was Herrera’s. To millennials, it is Orsay. To old New York, it will always carry the ghost of Mortimer’s.
## Mortimer’s ruled uptown
Mortimer’s opened in 1976 and became the room that defined Upper East Side power dining. With only 19 tables, it felt more like a private club than a restaurant.

> no restaurant is more revered
## The seating said everything
Owner Glenn Bernbaum turned the floor plan into a social ranking system. Regulars sat along the walls, while hopefuls landed in the middle.

> cool mattered more than cash
## Nobody came for dinner
The food was beside the point. Guests made meals from asparagus, tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms, and the pleasure of being seen.

> no one really went to Mortimer’s for the food
## The room was the draw
Henry Kissinger, Oscar de la Renta, Brooke Astor, Farrah Fawcett, Ryan O’Neal, Valentino, and Andy Warhol all passed through its orbit.

> The crowd is lush with money
## Herrera belonged there
Carolina Herrera and her husband Reinaldo were regulars. Wes Gordon saw the old Mortimer’s space as the right place to mark the fashion house’s 45th anniversary.

> the favorite restaurant of Carolina and her late husband
## Ladies who lunch returned
Gordon’s spring-summer 2027 collection asked what the classic uptown woman looks like now, moving from Park Avenue to taxis, meetings, and downtown streets.

> I wanted to own it
## The past got rebuilt
Gordon renamed the pop-up Herrera’s and revived Mortimer’s visual language. Artist Tim Snell made new murals, while black and white balloons nodded to the Herreras’ parties.

> a loving homage to Mortimer’s
## New heirs filled it
Ivy Getty, Talita von Fürstenberg, Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece, Tory Burch, Aerin Lauder, Ed Westwick, and Karlie Kloss brought the room back to life.
## Martinis, not museum rules
The night honored old uptown but loosened the collar. Mini burgers, grilled cheese, black-and-white cookies, martinis, margaritas, and Manhattans kept it present tense.

> I want martinis, margaritas, and Manhattans!
## Key takeaway

Herrera’s worked because it treated nostalgia as a living mood, not a museum piece.
