## A promise she kept
Céline Dion is back on stage after years of silence about her health. She had not performed since her diagnosis, and the first cancelled tour was blamed on Covid before anyone worried.

> C'était une promesse.
## It started with spasms
She first spoke only of muscle spasms. Medical follow-up gave them a name in December 2022: stiff-person syndrome, also called Moersch-Woltman syndrome.

> On ne sait pas encore tout de cette maladie rare mais l'on sait maintenant que c'est la cause des spasmes musculaires dont je souffre
## One person in a million
The MSD Manual describes muscles of the trunk and abdomen stiffening and thickening over time. Arms and legs are hit less hard. That trunk rigidity is the first warning sign.
## No cure, only relief
No treatment cures the disease, though medication can ease symptoms. It shows up most often alongside type 1 diabetes, some autoimmune conditions and certain cancers, and it keeps progressing toward full-body rigidity and disability.
## A comeback built for recovery
She chose a residency in one venue with dates spaced out for recovery, notes Dr Gérald Kierzek. The disease stays unpredictable, so precautions are heavy and zero risk does not exist.

> Je m'entraîne tous les jours. Mais je dois admettre que c'est un combat continuel.
## The road was rockier
At 58, on her first night back, she told the crowd she was well. She said she had tamed the fragility and turned it into a reason to keep going.

> Le chemin était plus rocailleux que prévu, la route plus longue que prévu, avec des escales non planifiées.
## Key takeaway

Stiff-person syndrome has no cure, but pacing, treatment and support can make a life, and a career, possible again.
