## First rate hike since 1994
Collin County commissioners voted 4-1 to raise the property tax rate for the first time in 33 years. The new rate is $0.151 per $100 of assessed value.
## Judge cast the lone no vote
County Judge Chris Hill was the only commissioner to vote against the fiscal 2027 budget and tax rate. The new rate takes effect October 1.
## $16.3 million in new revenue
The higher rate will generate about $16.3 million in additional property tax revenue. Median home values also rose to $517,911 from $480,773.
## Median homeowner pays $63 more
For a median-value home with a homestead exemption, county property taxes will increase from $682.10 to $744.98. That's an increase of $62.88.
## Hill wanted spending cuts instead
Hill proposed requiring county departments to cut budgets by 2.67% and forgoing employee raises. His proposal failed at multiple meetings.

> I can't support that, given how tight we already run. And we were digging for every single dollar that we possibly could, even this budget cycle.
## Raises needed to retain workers
Commissioners Susan Fletcher and Darrell Hale defended employee raises as necessary to recruit and retain workers. They said departments already operate with lean budgets.
## Rapid growth limits budget cuts
A Texas Public Policy Foundation study found county spending grew more slowly than population and inflation combined between 2015 and 2025.
## Key takeaway

Collin County's property tax rate increased for the first time since 1994, adding about $63 annually to the median homeowner's county tax bill.
