## NFL trade deadline nears
The NFL trade deadline is less than a month away, looming like a ticking timer counting down to the moment when middle-of-the-road teams are forced to pick a lane.
## Commanders' record slips
Washington Commanders slumped to a disappointing 1-3-1 record with injuries to most of their featured offensive staples and poor late-game choices.
## Daron Payne's contract
Daron Payne signed a four-year, $90 million contract in early 2023 and remains one of the more dependable defensive players.
## Payne's recent performance
Payne notched his first sack of the season on New York Giants' Jameis Winston, helping Daronte Jones' defensive coordinator.
## Payne's trade potential
Amidst the final year of his contract, Payne seems like a fitting name to dangle in front of teams looking for defensive interior help.
## ESPN's Jeremy Fowler
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler noted Payne's expiring deal makes him one of the more logical veterans to shop while still carrying trade value.
## Commanders' upcoming games
The Commanders face the undefeated 49ers in Week 6 and Los Angeles Rams in Week 9 before the trade deadline.
## Philadelphia Eagles
The hurting Philadelphia Eagles hover as a wounded animal looking for an easy victory over the same team they'd already bested in the season opener.
## Trade speculation
Brian Thomas Jr. trade idea: Commanders get Brian Thomas Jr., Jaguars get Daron Payne 2027 3rd round pick.
## Trade deadline impact
Should Washington limp into the deadline without a win in their previous five outings, Daron Payne could be traded.
## Key takeaway

Washington Commanders' poor record and upcoming games could lead to Daron Payne being traded before NFL trade deadline.
